Narasimha Dawn family’s Durga Puja pictorial

Oldest market in Kolkata

It is situated on Lindsay Street, Kolkata, just off Chowringhee Road.

New Market, also known as Hogg Market, is Kolkata’s oldest and biggest market. Over 2000 organized and unorganized shops operate here.

It was difficult for me to take shots maneuvering the crowd

From garments, accessories, flower, crockeries, utensils to the finest of street foods, it has got everything imaginable.

It is the richness of colours everywhere around me and I captured some.

The market can be hugely crowded, particularly this time before Dugra Puja, but if you’re geared for a bargain, or the unforgettable experience, it is not to be missed.

Though the place is messy and chaotic, but you will love it.

Despite the appearance of new modern stores and shopping malls, New Market remains at the core of the shopping experience in the city.

Maghen David Synegogue

Maghen David Synegogue is the biggest Synegogue in Asia

Maghen David Synegogue or the Shield of David, is situated at the junction of Brabourne Road and Canning street in Kolkata. It was built by Elias David Joseph Ezra, son of David Joseph Ezra and it was built on September 11, 1884. This site had been the site of Neveh Shalome (Oasis of Peace in Hibru), a Baghdadi Jewish house of prayer. It was demolished in the year 1883 and later rebuilt as a larger Synegogue next door.

Synegogue is a jews house of study and worship

Government of India declared this site as national heritage site. Presently, it is protected under Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and looked after by a Muslim family. The local Muslim families who take care of the place, are living here for generations.

As I entered inside the Synegogue, I was mesmerized by it’s interiors. I could not believe my eyes. It was so beautiful.

I was given a traditional jews cap, as mark of respect for the house”.

Maghen David follows the pattern of other Baghdadi synegogues in India. It was designed by a British Colonial architect based in India. The interiors are designed with beautiful stained glasses, gleaming chandeliers, ornate floral pillar stones shipped from Paris, chequered marble floor and stunning wooden chairs and benches. At the centre of the hall, there is Bimah, the raised platform from which the Rabbi preached, and the upper balconies are reserved for women.

This grand Synegogue is no longer a fully-functioned house of prayer due to the diminishing local jews population

Kolkata কোলাজ – A College Street Pictorial

This part of ‘City of joy’ is not all about the hustle and bustle; here it is all books, culture and nostalgia.

College Street – Trams are not the same anymore. It just don’t have that blueish vintage feel to it, but, it still runs nonetheless.

But the people and the diverse culture remain the same till now.

গল্পের বই পড়া ভুলে গেছি – College Street is no more the গল্পের বইয়ের ঠিকানা। Almost every book shop is filled with study books. Its so sad to see. Very few shops are selling traditional গল্পের বই।

But, the times are changing. Over the last six decades, the Indian Coffee House has been favourite with artists, actors, poets, filmmakers, intellectuals like Sakti Chattapdhya, Sunil Gangapadhya, Satyajit Ray, Soumitra Chatterjee, Amartya Sen and many more. Here, where the ideas are exchanged and so are the views.
